The sample patterns have been stitched on various grid sizes but for the cushion a 3⁄4 x 3⁄8 inch (1.9 x 1cm) grid is used for all the patterns. Each design could be used individually for an all-over pattern instead of the sampler arrangement.

JŪJI KIKKŌ (CROSS TORTOISESHELL)

The sashiko pattern is worked in rows. Draw extra horizontal lines (optional) to keep the centre crosses straight.

Mark a grid – the stitched sample is 3⁄8 x 3⁄4in (8mm x 1.9cm). Mark diagonal lines to form the tops of the hexagons. Following the red arrows (C), stitch the pattern in rows, stitching around three sides of the hexagon (shown in red on the stitched sample), keeping the thread continuous and stranding across the back to stitch the centre crosses, indicated in the diagram by red dashed lines.
